| What are Chia seeds? |
"Chia" is the common name for salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family. |
| Are Chia sprouts edible? |
Joseph Enterprises has never sought FDA approval for Chia Pets® and Chia® Heads, and therefore cannot promote them as a food product. Chia seeds are sold in health food stores, however, and many organic gardens harvest them for salads and sandwiches. Joseph Enterprises' chia seeds are not treated with any chemicals or fertilizers. |
| My cat ate the sprouts. Is this a problem? |
No. Many cats eat greens when they have an upset stomach, in order to induce vomiting. Keep in mind that your cat may be eating the chia sprouts because it already ingested something poisonous, and wants to throw up. Or it might just like to nibble on grassy stuff. Use your judgment, and when in doubt, call a veterinarian. |
| My Chia Pet® is leaking. Is this normal? |
Yes. Some seepage into the drip tray is to be expected. Seepage of water through the planter is how the chia sprouts are "watered." The drip tray will probably fill with water every 24 hours. Excessive leakage, however, possibly indicates a hairline crack on the planter. Please call us for more information. |
| Why are my Chia sprouts yellow? |
Your Chia® planter needs plenty of sunlight to achieve a full, green growth. Placing your Pet or Head near a window is ideal, but make sure the sun through the glass isn't too hot.

| I planted my Chia Pet®, but nothing happened. What should I do? |
Oftentimes the chia seeds won't sprout because there is a lack of moisture in the environment. To start over, scrub the old seeds from the planter and begin the process again. This time, try the "greenhouse technique" after you've spread the seeds. Loosely "tent" a plastic bag over the Chia® planter (making sure it doesn't touch the seeds) until sprouts have appeared (approximately 2 to 3 days). You may then remove the bag and proceed normally. |
| Is my Chia® reusable? |
Yes. You can replant your Chia® again and again. Be sure to follow instructions closely, and soak for 24 hours. |
| Can I use other herb seeds for my Chia® planter? |
Yes and no. Seeds that form a gelatinous coat when soaked in water, such as basil, tend to work best since they will adhere to the Chia® planter. Some customers have reported luck with grass seeds as well. As a general guideline, look for seeds that will sprout quickly. Thyme, marjoram, and oregano are NOT good choices for this reason. |
| How can I get more Chia® seeds? |

| What types of Chia® animals are available? |
Currently, Chia Pets® are available in Chia® Bunny, Chia® Frog, Chia® Hippo, Chia® Kitten, Chia® Pig, Chia® Puppy, Chia® Bear, Chia® Turtle, and Chia® Tree. In 1996, we have also introduced four Chia® Heads: Chia® Guy, Chia® Clown, Chia® Professor, and Chia® Kid. |
| Why are Chia® items only sold during the holiday season? |
Chia Pets® and Chia Heads® are handmade pottery items. It takes an entire year to produce enough Pets and Heads for one holiday season. |
